Pah Homestead & the Pullman Hotel
Morning tea on a homestead veranda, a harbour tiki tour, and lunch with a front-row view of the runway.
Our day began with morning tea on the veranda of Pah Homestead in Hillsborough, where the cheese scones and cinnamon buns from Hill House Café are some of the best in Auckland. Afterwards we explored the homestead and the grounds of Monte Cecilia Park, a hidden gem most of the group had never heard of.
A scenic tiki tour took us over the Māngere Bridge, with a stop at the Manukau Yacht Club for views up and down the harbour, then around the back of Māngere Mountain and through the striking architecture of the Airport Business Park.
Lunch was blue cod and kūmara chips in the Pullman Hotel's ninth-floor restaurant, followed by coffee in the lounge right beside the runway. Watching ladies in their eighties and nineties kneeling on the couch, oohing and aahing as the planes took off, was a moment of pure joy.
